Definitions The definition of sexual assault includes any sexual assault by penetration or rape, including attempts and any other sexual assault such as indecent exposure or unwanted touching. The following are subcategories of the “any sexual assault" category: sexual assault by rape or penetration, including attempts; this includes sexual assault by penetration with any object; other sexual assaults including indecent exposure or unwanted touching; the category includes indecent exposure, or being touched sexually whether it was agreed to or not. Calculations No calculations were performed in the data acquisition of this indicator as appropriate data was readily available in the final format specified by this indicator. For insight into the details of potential calculations please refer to the original source metadata or source contact.
Other information The original figures refer to data that runs from April of that year to March the following year. For example, 2015 data date range is from April 2015 to March 2016. Coverage is limited to England and Wales. The headline data are published in July, however the specific breakdowns (disaggregation’s, i.e. age, gender, etc) are published in February. The 2015 to 2016 Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) ran for the first time a module of questions asking adults whether they were abused as a child. The module on abuse during childhood was added to the self completion section of the CSEW in place of the follow-up questions on serious sexual assault for survey year ending March 2016.
